The Ghana Police Service has issued a warrant for the arrest of Kwame Ato Asare Ani for his involvement in a viral video in which police officers who are allegedly engaged in galamsey are threatened. Ani talked from a hiding place. Asare Ani asserted that he was a police informant and not an armed robber, contrary to what a police statement claimed, during an appearance on Kevin Taylor's Loud Silence TV program on April 2, 2023. When asked why, as an informant, he felt the police were chasing him, he responded that their disagreement stemmed from money he had obtained on their behalf but refused to return. He said that the sum was GH $100,000 (one billion old cedis), which he had obtained from some illicit miners and given to the police. "The police are actually chasing me because I refused to give them the one billion Ghana cedis (GH 100,000.00) they instructed me to collect at a site in Kwakukrom. They are upset with me because of this, "said he. He gave the following justification for keeping the cash: "I didn't surrender the money because I felt duped after working with them for so long. Every time, they would simply give me a few thousand or two thousand dollars. "They're calling me a thief because I took $1 billion from them but didn't deliver it to them. But, nobody can show that I have ever robbed a person's site, so I am not an armed thief. Before they will return my car and other machines that they have confiscated, Sarfo (Axim Police Commander) urged me to bring the one billion," he stated. On Sunday, April 2, 2023, GhanaWeb reported on a popular video that purportedly shows the gang's alleged leader. Later on Sunday, the Ghana Police Service issued a statement claiming that four males were detained on March 28 after the Axim Divisional Police Patrol Unit reported being attacked by a gang. The police claim that they also searched Kwame Asare's home and found several firearms and other materials there. The Axim Divisional Police patrol team stated that a gang attacked them on March 9 and took some of the police officers' mobile phones as well as the magazine of a service rifle. "As soon as the report was received, an intelligence operation was started to apprehend the culprits. "On March 28, 2023, four men—Kojo Siah alias Mozey; Emmanuel Mensah alias Kofi Asamoah; Maxwell Cudjoe; and Agyabu Haruna Dissawu—were detained for their alleged involvement in the incident after roughly three weeks of the intelligence operation. "Three pump-action shotguns were found after a search was performed at the home of Kwame Ato Asare Ani, the primary suspect, who is currently at large. Moreover, eight reloaded BB cartridges, a machete, and a pump-action shotgun were found in the suspect's unregistered Honda CRV car. Two live, reloaded BB cartridges and one unregistered motorcycle were also taken from the accused, according to the police statement. According to the statement, the police learned about the footage of the altercation between some of their officers and the arrested gang in which they were pleading with them regarding an extortion charge. The Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB) has subsequently been tasked with investigating the extortion claim, the statement claims. The gang's leader is heard shouting at a group of police officers in the aforementioned video, claiming, "You requested me to show you something, and I presented it to you. Now that I ask you to leave the car with me, you insistence that I am being sent away. Where did you direct me to? We gave you everything when you came to the site to demand payment. I then requested that you drop me off at the car, but you insisted on sending me. As a result, you would have expelled me if I hadn't requested someone to block the road with a motorbike, the gang boss is heard irately telling a police officer with a patrol car in what appeared to be a woodland. The gang leader was shouting orders at his followers as the altercation went on, and the police officers were appealing on their knees. One of the officers says, "Kwame we implore you," as he struggles to keep his weapon from the gang boss. Other stories From March 26 to March 29, police will divert traffic in Accra and Cape Coast.
