The Electoral Commission of Ghana organised a “Let the Citizen Know” encounter at the Commission’s new Head Office.
Mrs. Jean Mensa, the Chairperson of the Commission, gave a briefing on the upcoming Voters’ Registration exercise and District Level Elections. She said that for the purposes of the 2023 Voters’ Registration exercise the existing C.I. 91(1) as amended would be relied on in spite of the inherent challenge of the guarantor system.
She also noted that the guarantor system provides a window for illegal persons – foreigners and minors – to register as voters.
In 2020 for instance, 15,000 foreigners and minors were expunged from the Voters’ Register.
The Chairperson mentioned that the Commission had developed a new C.I. to cure the challenges with the existing one in that the new C.I. proposes the Ghana Card as the sole document for identification and also an all-year-round (continuous) voter registration process in district offices nationwide.
