During the party’s Special Delegates Congress on August 26, 2023, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, a candidate for the New Patriotic Party’s flagbearer position, resorted to verbally threatening both Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
A situational report on the condition of Kennedy Agyapong’s agent who was campaigning for him in the North East Region during the voting is believed to have sparked the outburst that was recorded while he was on the phone.
Bernard Antwi Boasiako, alias Wontumi, the NPP’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, later tried to imply that Ken’s reaction was the result of his being misinformed about the particular occurrence.
However, on August 28, 2023, the Kennedy Agyapong campaign team had a news conference where some of its representatives described their experiences with threats, intimidation, and assault during the election.
Hajia Humukin Saed, who on Monday spoke to the media on behalf of the Assin North Member of Parliament in the North East Region, described how she was forced to resign from her position in the early hours of the election due to threats made against her life at the polling place.
The agent claimed she tried to draw media attention since the on-site police had ignored her concerns after she had seen instances of infractions and the presence of unaccredited people at the polling place in violation of the party’s permitted protocols.
“As I was complaining to the policeman, one of them [unaccredited people] came over and asked what Hajia was upset about. I replied, “My brother, what is going here is not right. Why don’t we work within the constraints of the election laws to maintain calm because only 28 persons are anticipated to vote here? She said, “His argument was that all of these people are members of our own party, but I insisted no, that is not what the rules indicate.
