Macron calls for a “smart compromise” in immigration laws

He attacked the Republicans and Socialists for siding with the far-right Rassemblement National and the hard-left France Unbowed in order to defeat the draft law.

“It was a game of obstruction and refusal of dialogue that the French people cannot understand,” Macron stated.

“Even I don’t understand it. We might disagree or agree, but I think it unusual that we aren’t talking.”

There is a fierce debate over immigration and security in French society at the same time as the frenzied negotiations over the bill’s language.

For Macron, who many view as a lame duck as he serves out the remainder of his mandate without being able to run for office a third time in 2027, the legislation’s rejection was extremely upsetting.
