The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has been investigating allegations of financial misconduct and corruption related to the contract.

The Contract and Payments

The contract, initially commenced by the Ministry for Special Development Initiative, aimed to provide ambulances for the National Ambulance Service. Payments for the contract were made using the tax refund account of the Ghana Revenue Authority. The OSP has been probing the circumstances surrounding the contract and payments.

Ken Ofori-Atta’s Medical Treatment and OSP Investigation

Ken Ofori-Atta, the former Finance Minister, has informed the OSP that he is currently undergoing medical treatment in the United States and is unable to honor an invitation for questioning. However, he has assured the OSP of his commitment to appearing for questioning on a fixed date.

OSP’s Warning and Interpol Red Notice
The OSP has warned Ken Ofori-Atta that failure to appear for questioning on June 2 would result in an Interpol Red Notice being issued, and extradition proceedings would be initiated in any country where he may be located. A Red Notice is a request to law enforcement worldwide to locate and provisionally arrest a person pending extradition, surrender, or similar legal action.

Ken Ofori-Atta’s Lawsuit

Ken Ofori-Atta has taken legal steps to block the OSP from re-declaring him wanted, arguing that the agency’s actions are baseless and unjustified. He has dismissed allegations of financial misconduct and corruption, insisting that he has been cooperating with investigators through his legal representatives.

Human Rights Court Ruling

The Human Rights Court has adjourned to June 18 for a ruling on the motion filed by Ken Ofori-Atta, seeking to restrain the OSP from declaring him wanted. The court’s decision will determine the next steps in the saga.

Implications and Conclusion

The Ken Ofori-Atta saga has significant implications for Ghana’s fight against corruption. The OSP’s investigation and potential Interpol Red Notice highlight the seriousness of the allegations and the need for transparency and accountability in government contracts.
