On March 15, 2023, an Accra High Court dismissed a defamation lawsuit filed by investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas against Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, a member of parliament for Assin Central.
The plaintiff brought the lawsuit in 2018, among other things asking for GH$25 million in monetary damages.
Nonetheless, the court presided over by Justice Eric Baah determined that the statements were true and fair despite determining that certain of the defendant’s accusations against the plaintiff may have been defamatory.
The lawsuit was ultimately rejected by the court, and the defendant was given a payment of 50,000 Ghana cedis to cover his legal expenses.
The MP afterwards referred to the decision as a win for straightforward discourse around investigating terrorism.
The journalist expressed serious concerns about the decision as well, calling it a farce of justice in part. Nevertheless, he did not say whether he would file an appeal against the decision.
