The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) declared that the Parliament-passed Emissions Levy would go into effect on February 1, 2024.
As Accra-based TV3 has reported, it has emerged that a technology problem caused the implementation to stall on Day 1.
“Checks by 3News indicate that the website through which applications were supposed to be processed (www.Ghana.gov) failed to function,” the website reported.
Our sources at GRA have not yet confirmed the claimed failure to GhanaWeb Business.
As mandated by law, individuals wishing to pay the levy must complete the necessary paperwork only via the Ghana.gov website in order for the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) to accept their payment and provide roadworthy certificates.
The tax legislation, approved by parliament in December 2023, aims to put a charge on internal combustion engine vehicles’ carbon dioxide equivalent emissions.
In order to meet net zero aims, the government is working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote eco-friendly and environmentally friendly technologies. This includes the levy.
For example, GH¢75 is the annual fee that users of tricycles and motorcycles must pay.
Up to 3000 cc cars, buses, and coaches will pay GH¢150 annually; over 3000 cc cars, buses, and coaches, as well as cargo trucks and articulated trucks, will pay GH¢300 annually.
