Professor Steve Hanke, an American economist who teaches applied economics at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, has criticized President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, claiming that he deliberately led Ghana into a debt problem.
He claimed in an X post that the president’s intentional acts are the reason Ghana is drowning in debt. The national debt of the nation decreased by GH¢14.2 billion between June and September 2023, although it still stands at GH¢567.3 billion ($51.0 billion), or 66.4% of GDP.
A halt to foreign borrowing and slight currency gains are blamed for the volatility.
