5 significant highlights from the Academy Awards in 2023

Michelle Yeoh achieves a first.

By becoming the first Asian woman to win Best Actress at the Oscars, the iconic actress put a thrilling awards season to a close. She defeated Cate Blanchett, the “Tár” character and a two-time Oscar winner.

Winner of Best Supporting Actor is Ke Huy Quan.

The entire theater gave Quan a standing ovation. Prior to giving an emotional acceptance speech that moved the audience to tears, he had to wait for the room to calm down.

He triumphed over rivals Judd Hirsch for “The Fabelmans,” Brendan Gleeson and Barry Keoghan for “The Banshees of Inisherin,” and Brian Tyree Henry for “Causeway” to win for his cherished comeback performance in “Everything Everywhere Everything at Once.”

Quan remarked while holding his prize and wiping tears from his eyes “The age of my mother is 84. She is observing at home. I just won an Oscar, mom! I spent a year in a refugee camp before finding myself here, on the largest platform in Hollywood. Some claim that tales like these only appear in movies. It’s happening to me, and I can’t believe it. The American dream is this! She has been telling me that my time will come one day for the past 20 years, month after month and year after year. To achieve your dreams, you must have faith in them. On mine, I almost gave up. Keep your dreams alive, everyone out there!”
