In response to an interview Kobina Tahir Hammond gave to a Kumasi-based television station, attorneys for Assin North Member of Parliament for Assin North Constituency James Gyakye Quayson filed a writ for contempt against him at the High Court on Friday, July 7, 2023.
Gyakye Quayson’s attorneys contend that KT Hammond’s media interview violated the MP’s right to a fair trial and the presumption of innocence.
The writ’s attorney, Justin Pwavra Teriwajah, said that the Respondent’s remarks were also in contempt of the court since they were so detrimental to the legal proceedings.
He continued by saying that KT Hammond, who represents Adansi Asokwa Constituency in the House of Representatives, is blatantly usurping the role of the trial judge.
He claimed that in order to maintain the integrity of the judicial system, the Court has the authority to hold KT Hammond and others who share his views in contempt of court under Article 126(2) of the 1992 Constitution.
The writ demands that the Minister appear before the court, stand trial for contempt of court, and, if found guilty, receive a prison sentence.
In an earlier interview on Oyerepa TV in Kumasi on Tuesday, July 4, 2023, KT Hammond predicted that Gyakye Quayson would serve time in prison.
