The Acting CEO of Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), Dr Randy Abbey, has revealed widespread mismanagement and corruption within the organisation.
During a recent interview, Dr Abbey disclosed that approximately 200 containers of supplies intended for cocoa production are missing. These containers, which included shipments from 2022/2023, 2023/2024, and 2024/2025, were supposedly stored at the port but have incurred demurrages and been auctioned.
Investigation Underway
The National Investigation Bureau is currently investigating the matter. Dr Abbey stated that despite records showing 200 containers, they cannot be located. The acting CEO added that the previous administration’s failure to return the containers has resulted in COCOBOD and its suppliers being blacklisted by international shipping lines.
Financial Implications
Dr Abbey revealed that the previous administration had signed a contract worth $48 million to import the same items that had not been cleared for the 2025/2026 cocoa season. An escrow account at the Ghana International Bank in London was used to secure the funds.
Abandoned Shipments
During his tour, Dr Abbey discovered a large quantity of imported cocopeat abandoned at the Sefwi Boako cocoa station. He questioned the managers about the unnecessary importation, expressing frustration at the apparent lack of planning and oversight.
The revelations highlight the need for improved management and oversight within COCOBOD. Dr Abbey’s efforts to address these issues and restore transparency and accountability will be crucial in ensuring the organisation’s future success.
