
As part of continuous efforts to fight crime in the area, the IGP Special Operations Team has stepped up security operations in the Tamale Metropolis of the Northern Region, apprehending multiple individuals and stopping the flow of illegal substances.
The operation, which took place on Monday, January 19, 2026, involved the deployment of 105 people under the command of DSP Philip Perdison and DSP Bawah Abdul Jalil.
The exercise is a component of a larger security campaign that targets drug trafficking, sexual offences, robberies, kidnappings, attacks on mobile money vendors, and other illegal activity.
The Team Commander, DSP Bawah Abdul Jalil, briefed the staff before the operation’s commencement, emphasising the significance of professionalism, discipline, and rigorous commitment to human rights during the exercise.
At the Vice-Chancellor’s request, the team visited Tamale Technical University (TaTU) as part of the day’s events.
Prof. Bashiru Imoro Iden Saed, the vice-chancellor; Karimu Hardi of Hadra Security Ltd., the campus security contractor; and Rtd. WO I Akanteba Lawson, the university’s head of security, welcomed the delegation.
Prof. Saed praised the Ghana Police Service, the Inspector-General of Police, and the IGP Special Operations Team for their aggressive efforts to uphold peace and order in the Tamale Metropolis.
He advocated for increased security measures to safeguard students, employees, and property and brought attention to the growing security concerns on college campuses, especially theft instances at the University Hospital.
In response, DSP Bawah Abdul Jalil reassured the university administration of the team’s dedication to collaborating closely with educational establishments and resolving the stated security issues over time.
The squad conducted intelligence-led patrols at designated crime-prone areas throughout the city after the engagement at TaTU.
Two suspects, Alhassan Abdul Shakun and Hawa Yakubu, were detained at the Water Works area for allegedly possessing Indian hemp and Royal 225, respectively.
Seven people were detained at the Aboabo Market for allegedly possessing dried leaves that were thought to be Indian hemp.
Ikram Abdul Razak, Farouk Nahim, Issah Mohammed, Abdulai Fuseini, Umaru Zulkarina, Mohammed Marawu, and Shaibu Ibrahim were among them.
Seven individuals were arrested at the Kamina Barracks enclave after they were found in possession of large amounts of Koffex cough medication and dried leaves that appeared to be Indian hemp.
Simi Michael, Abdul Lasa, Iddi Suraya, Franklina Owusu, Albert Anafo, Sadiq Alhassan, and Ziblina Muntala were their names.
Additionally, three people who claimed to be members of the armed forces were detained at the same site for using and possessing what seemed to be Indian hemp.
Following identity verification, they were turned over to the Regional Military Police Command in accordance with Police Service Instructions (SI) 167, which specifies how servicemen implicated in criminal matters are handled.
The seized items have been secured for forensic examination, and all other suspects have been held at the Sakasaka Police Station to support ongoing investigations.
The operation was deemed successful by police officials, who noted that it greatly interrupted illegal narcotics activity in the city.
The IGP Special Operations Team’s coordinated efforts and intelligence-led strategy, according to the Ghana Police Service, continue to improve public safety and boost trust in security operations throughout Tamale.
