GWL adopts preventative actions: Overflowing Weija Dam to be released

In an effort to mitigate the rising water levels at the Weija Dam, Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has announced plans to release excess water to reduce the risk to people’s lives and property.

The Weija Dam’s water levels have been steadily rising since the start of the rainy season, according to a letter from GWL dated Thursday, March 7, 2024, emphasizing the necessity for regulated spilling.

The business stressed how crucial this measure is to averting any possible catastrophe.

Starting out slowly, the pace of spillage will be adjusted in response to the water entering the dam. GWL wants to protect the dam’s integrity while minimizing its effects downstream.

As a precaution against the danger of a collapse, the volume of water that spills will continue based on the water level of the dam. GWL acknowledged the likelihood of certain inconveniences and apologized for any disruptions caused by the operation.

The GWL reiterated in its statement that it is dedicated to safeguarding public safety and mitigating the impact of this natural event.

“The Weija Dam’s controlled overflow of excess water demonstrates responsible management of Ghana’s water resources, giving downstream communities priority.”
