Following the NDC’s triumph, Wontumi will be detained like a bird — Mustapha Gbande

If the National Democratic Congress (NDC) wins the next general elections, Mustapha Gbande, the deputy general secretary of the party, has threatened that the NPP’s Ashanti regional chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, will be arrested.

As soon as the NDC is proclaimed the election’s winner, Gbande claims the party will move quickly to file a lawsuit against Wontumi.

“The day following the NDC’s announcement as the election’s victor, we would detain Chairman Wontumi, the chairman of the Ashanti Regional Committee. We’re going to pick him like a chicken,” Gbande declared vehemently.

His remarks follow Chairman Wontumi’s rhetorical assault on NDC flagbearer John Dramani Mahama, in which he was accused of harboring a personal grudge against certain Ashanti Region residents.

This comes after Mahama blamed illicit mining operations and agriculture degradation for the ongoing drought in Ghana’s northern region.

Speaking on Saturday, August 24, 2024, during the NDC manifesto launch at the University of Education, Winneba, Mahama promised to combat galamsey and illegal deforestation, which he feels are major contributors to the region’s environmental difficulties.

“We’re going to close the forest reserves and take legal action against Akonta Mining and all those who have damaged our forest reserves,” he declared. They will be marched out of the forest reserves by us. You go and ruin the entire forest reserve because you want to steal a little gold from some of the 700, 800, and 1000-year-old trees that are located in the reserves.”
Chairman Wontumi, on the other hand, disagreed and claimed that documentation is what distinguishes lawful mining from illicit mining, and for a businessman of his caliber, obtaining legal documentation is not an issue.

Could you propel Wontumi? What distinguishes legal from illegal behavior? A paper makes a difference. I’m a seasoned miner, so how can I complete paperwork?” Wontumi asked a question.

Mahama’s intention in running for office, according to Wontumi, who also serves as CEO of Akonta Mining, was to exact revenge on his adversaries.
