Francis-Xavier Sosu Vows to Appeal Parliament Car Smasher’s 5-Year Sentence

Human rights lawyer and Member of Parliament for Madina Constituency, Francis-Xavier Sosu, is contesting the 5-year jail term handed to Christopher Kofi Kyere Sorkpa for vandalising cars at the Parliament premises.

Sosu argues that Sorkpa’s case bears resemblance to that of Charles Antwi, who received a 10-year sentence for entering a church with a gun where former President John Mahama was worshipping.

Sosu questions how someone claiming to be acting on God’s instructions could be deemed sane enough to plead guilty without undergoing a mental evaluation. He believes this oversight constitutes a failure of the justice system, particularly given Sorkpa’s lack of legal representation.

The Accra High Court convicted Sorkpa on six counts, including conspiracy to commit unlawful damage, after he pleaded guilty on December 20, 2024. Another suspect, Wisdom Ahli, was remanded into police custody, with the case adjourned until January 9, 2025. Sosu has declared his intention to appeal Sorkpa’s sentence, citing concerns about the justice system’s handling of mentally unfit individuals.
