Vice President Opoku-Agyemang’s Medical Leave: What We Know So Far

Ghana’s Vice President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, is taking a three-week medical leave of absence, starting April 7, 2025, to focus on her recovery in the United Kingdom.

Felix Kwakye Ofosu, spokesperson for President John Dramani Mahama, assured the public that she’s in good health and expected to resume her duties shortly.

Background

Professor Opoku-Agyemang was appointed Vice President in January 2025, becoming the first woman to hold the office. She’s a renowned academic and politician with a distinguished career in education, having served as Minister for Education from 2013 to 2017 and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast.

Current Health Status

According to Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the vice president’s medical practitioners have advised her to take a short rest, and she’s currently receiving treatment in the UK. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Foreign Affairs Minister, also reassured Ghanaians that she’s recuperating well, crediting her progress to the prayers and support of Ghanaians and the international community.

Addressing Rumors

Ablakwa dismissed rumours surrounding the vice president’s health, describing them as “vicious and unGhanaian propaganda”. He emphasised her resilience and achievements, highlighting her role as a role model and inspiration to young girls and women.

Expected Return

With her medical leave set to last three weeks, Professor Opoku-Agyemang is expected to return to her duties shortly. Her spokesperson has confirmed that she’s taking the necessary time to focus on her recovery, and Ghanaians are eagerly awaiting her return.¹.
