NHIS extends dialysis coverage to 6 months for free

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) in its 20th Anniversary celebration has announced a significant enhancement to its health benefit coverage to include dialysis patients for 6 months.

In the enhanced health benefit coverage announced on June 1, 2024, Patients aged under 18 and above 60 will receive all eight free dialysis sessions per month under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) from June to December 2024.

Also, persons aged 18 to 59 at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital,Cape Coast Teaching Hospital, Effie Nkwanta Regional Hospital, Ho Teaching Hospital and the Tamale Teaching Hospital will receive 2 dialysis sessions per month.

This move by the National Health Insurance is part of the government’s commitment to finding sustainable interventions to deal with renal illnesses not currently covered.

The NHIS in its statement announcing this move indicated that its source of funding is the Ghc 2 million allocation in the NHIA Formula to support needy and vulnerable patients.

The Scheme added that an allocation of two million four hundred Thousand budget approved for Corporate social responsibility are the funds being used for this investment.
