Hon. Kennedy Osei Nyarko, Member of Parliament for Akim Swedru, has boldly declared that cocoa farmers in Ghana have never been better off than under the current Akufo-Addo government.

In a passionate defence of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) record on cocoa, Nyarko highlighted the significant strides made in transforming the sector.
A Comparison of Administrations
Nyarko contrasted the NPP’s achievements with the alleged failures of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) under former President John Dramani Mahama. He accused the NDC of nearly collapsing Ghana’s cocoa industry while crediting the NPP with rolling out farmer-friendly initiatives that have substantially increased incomes.
Evidence of Success
To illustrate the NPP’s success, Nyarko cited a notable example: “In 2016, one bag of cocoa could only purchase 13 bags of cement. By 2024, that same bag can buy 30 bags of cement!” He sees this as a clear indication of the NPP’s positive impact on the lives of cocoa farmers.
A Brighter Future Ahead
Nyarko also hinted at even better times ahead for cocoa farmers if Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia wins the presidency. He suggested that farmers could expect a possible increase in producer prices for the 2024/25 season, further enhancing their livelihoods.
Critique of the Opposition
Nyarko was forthright in his criticism of the NDC, dismissing their record on cocoa as unimpressive. He claimed that the NDC failed to introduce any meaningful policies to support cocoa farmers, crediting instead the NPP and former President John Kufuor for major reforms in the industry.
Appreciation for Cocoa Farmers
Nyarko praised the dedication of cocoa farmers, assuring them of ongoing support from the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) and the government. “Our cocoa farmers are doing better than ever before, and we’re just getting started,” he declared.
A Warning to Farmers
As the elections approach, Nyarko issued a stark warning to farmers: “Don’t risk it all by handing the reins back to someone who jeopardised your livelihoods. Mahama is a threat to everything we’ve achieved.” He urged farmers to reject Mahama and continue with the NPP’s policies, which have, in his view, significantly improved their lives.
New Cocoa Price Announcement
In a positive development, Nyarko announced a new cocoa price of GHC48,000 per tonne, or GHC3,000 per 64kg bag, representing an increase designed to provide farmers with a much-needed financial boost.
Hon. Kennedy Osei Nyarko’s passionate defence of the NPP’s record on cocoa underscores the party’s commitment to improving the lives of farmers. As the elections draw near, his message to cocoa farmers is clear: the NPP has delivered, and it’s time to build on the progress made.
