This contradicts a previous report by the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) stating that starting on October 29, 2022, transportation costs will rise.

On the morning of October 27, 2022, commuters discovered operators had already started charging new tickets, which left them shocked and “mad.”

Why are prices increasing now when they were expected to on Saturday? In our country, we are our own worst adversaries. Everyone desires to defraud someone, an irate traveler informed GhanaWeb.

However, operators claim that the cause for the increase has been the rise in gasoline prices.

The GPRTU General Secretary, Godfred Abulbire, claimed in an interview with Accra-based JoyNews on October 26 that the 19 percent raise was the result of extensive discussions the union’s members had with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and other transportation providers around the nation.

“An appropriate question would have been one that was about 49 percent. However, in light of the economic climate, we were forced to drop back to 25%, then to 20%, and finally, yesterday, to 16.5% [from the transport minister],” he said.
