Afenyo-Markin vs. Jinapor: The “dirty” verbal altercation between two close friends in parliament

For the record, the MPs who were directly impacted by the man-made floods in the Volta Region and other parts of the nation caused by the water spillage from the Akosombo Dam were already dissatisfied with a number of issues prior to the Energy Minister, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, appearing before parliament to give an update on the situation.

Among such were the government’s lack of dedication to giving the tens of thousands of people impacted by the spilled hope, despite the fact that the government has been primarily held responsible for the disaster due to an exercise carried out by the Volta River Authority (VRA).

 

Therefore, it was anticipated that things may slightly worsen following his speech to parliament on Wednesday, November 8, 2023, when a few lawmakers, particularly those whose constituencies have been impacted, stood up to speak.

But there was a brief but heated moment when two close friends from the Majority and Minority sides of the House clashed over a charge made by one of them.

This has to do with giving relief supplies to the Central Gonja District’s impacted residents.

 

In response to the energy minister’s testimony in parliament, local member John Jinapor brought up a troubling point: according to reports, the distribution of aid was being overseen by the chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in his backyard.

Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, the Deputy Majority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, strongly objected to the assertions and called for the necessity of separating politics from such a delicate job.

He asked his close buddy Jon Jinapor to take back the comment because it lacked proof, but the former swiftly refuted him by presenting video evidence to back up his assertions.
