A new record is set by Ruth E. Carter.
She is now the first Black woman to receive two Oscar nominations. For her work on Marvel’s “Black Panther” in 2019, she made history by being the first Black person to win the Oscar for costume design. She received recognition tonight for her work on the movie’s prequel, “Wakanda Forever.”
“Good to see you again,” Carter said as she thanked filmmaker Ryan Coogler and accepted her prize. Thank you to the Academy for honoring the Black woman superhero. She is every woman in this movie—she endures, she loves, she triumphs. My mom is this woman. Mable Carter became an ancestor this past week. I was ready for this after watching this movie. Please take care of Mom, Chadwick. I want to congratulate Nate Moore and Ryan Coogler for their inspiring work. We are changing how culture is portrayed as a whole. Thank you on behalf of the Marvel family, Kevin Feige, Victoria Alonso, Louis D’Esposito, and their team of brilliant individuals. I share this with many talented people whose hands and hearts contributed to the creation of the Talokan and Wakanda outfits. For my mother, please. She
